Mission Statement: (See Web Site For Updated Information)
Best Buddies at UCLA aims to build friendships between people with developmental disabilities and a college volunteer. This is done by pairing a UCLA volunteer with a young adult who is developmentally disabled. The UCLA volunteer's required to visit the Ruddy at least twice a month for the entire academic year. Group outings where the entire Best Buddies chapter comes together are held twice a quarter. Through these friendships, Best Buddies strives to eliminate the common stereotype that individuals hold of people with developmental disabilities. Only through interaction can we learn that individuals with developmental disabilities are people like you and me. For this reason, Best Buddies tries to demonstrate and expand appropriate interaction skills to the high school buddies (known as Buddies) by having the UCLA volunteers (College Buddies) serve as role models. College Buddies are encouraged to help the Buddies act independently in tasks that are carried out on a day-to-day basis. Such tasks include ordering and purchasing one?s own food, paying their own fare, and allowing them to decide in what activity they want to participate. Best Buddies provides an opportunity for the Buddies to socialize outside of their often limited social and educational setting. The activities that Best Buddies hosts offers them an opportunity of learning the value of living in a more diverse community. This is not only beneficial to Best Buddies but also for the community, which often overlooks people with developmental disabilities. Large group outings such as trips to the museum and to sporting events, organized by Best Buddies, will provide immersion into the community and at the same time allow the community to become more aware of people with developmental disabilities. These outings are especially important for the Buddies who come from a low-income background. Buddies from a low-income background tend to be more sheltered in their interactions with community affairs. This is due to financial constraints, lack of awareness, and lack of information of the parents. The activities that Best Buddies participates in, assist the Buddies in developing communication skills, teamwork, discipline, and financial skills that are necessary for success in the community. Best Buddies is aggressively meeting the challenges that limit full integration into society for people with developmental disabilities, which will hopefully result in the dissipation of stereotypes. In addition, Best Buddies also plans to have a greater parental involvement and collaboration with other Best Buddies chapters in the Western Regional Area, such as participating in Best Buddies Day during the month of March.
